Wood is one of the most important industrial sectors in Europe, with close to 3 million workers, and 380.000 enterprises generating an annual turnover of 300 billion euros, to which SMEs contribute widely. However, the wood sector is currently affected by the crisis, especially due to the contraction of the construction sector, a key market for wood products. This has given rise to an important restructuring of the sector, a topic which feeds the news in many parts of Europe.
In this context, a set of actors from 6 European countries gathered under Wood2Good, a project supported by the European Commission, the objective of which is to analyse the current situation of the restructuring of the timber industry. This will lead, in a near future, to the elaboration of concrete recommendations to make the timber industry a remarkable sector of the Green Economy.
This conference will pay particular attention to understanding the current situation in the timber sector in terms of employment and restructuring. The project partners will present the first results of a survey conducted at European level with representatives of the key actors in the timber industry in Europe. This event is the first step for the identification of recommendations that will enable SMEs in the wood sector to ensure a responsible change towards a Green Economy in Europe.
